In the last few months, with the global pandemic, and Covid-19 running wild, online virtual learning has become the norm for educational institutes. It looks like it might be the best way forward, and there are several advantages to learning at home, the most important of which is setting your own space. However, it does take some practice to get used to, and requires guidelines to make it more effective for learning, particularly if you are only used to only traditional methods of schooling till now. Here’s how you can maximise our virtual learning experience.
Just like in the classroom, make sure the space around you is fit for learning. What this means could vary from person to person, depending on where you work more efficiently – either in a well-organised, separate learning space, or from the more familiar comfort of your room. Either way, make sure the area is clean and free of distractions. It should be an environment that helps you focus and ready to learn. If possible, make sure there are no interruptions during your study time.
During your lessons, make sure to ask any questions you might have, and raise points for discussion. Most online classrooms are equipped with unique features to do this without interrupting the lesson, so there’s no need to feel awkward about waiting for the perfect time to ask. You could, for example, either virtually raise your hand, type a question in the group chat for a discussion, or directly message the instructor. This makes the virtual classroom more interactive and a full-fledged group learning experience, rather than an online lecture. Make sure to speak up in the classroom and participate in all the planned group activities.

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you have to give up on the opportunity to talk to your friends and have a group study session. Keep the conversation going, and learn with your friends and classmates through group chats, forums, and video calls. Discuss what happened in the classroom, revise lessons, brainstorm ideas, and create new lines of thought. Sometimes the best way to learn is to explain it to others, and talk about it. This will also help you feel more connected to the material, reduce virtual social distancing and also maximise your virtual learning experience.

The advantage of learning from home is the plethora of learning materials and practical experience one gains, while simultaneously learning from the classroom. Use real-life objects from around the house to better understand and revise the subject matter. For example, you can experiment with mirrors and various liquids while learning about reflection and refraction. Take a look at the plants and greenery around you, when learning about different types of leaves and flowers. Go to the kitchen to identify various elements and chemical compounds, and play with other solutions, and colloids. Awaken the scientist in you!
The internet is full of fun learning resources, with content that is best suited to you. If you’re having trouble understanding a concept or a subject, chances are you’re not the only one, and there will be a video or a blog that can explain it to you in a way that you understand. Also keep an eye out for various interactive software and educational games that also help maximise your virtual learning experience. For example, a site that lets you move around and investigate a complete dinosaur skeleton, or games that teach basic arithmetic or grammar. Even Google Earth is an excellent resource you can use to visit monuments and historical places around the world.
